Netflix Video Gives Away Pizzas at Safeway And Shaws

In a rare subscription promotion, Netflix Inc is giving away 2 free Newman’s Own frozen pizzas to new rental dvd subscribers at Safeway’s, Albertson’s and Shaw’s stores. Safeway is popular on the west coast while Shaw operates on the east coast. Albertsons is the third retailer to take part in the frozen pizza give away by Netflix this year. It is not often that product give-a-ways are a part of Netflix marketing, so this campaign is unique for the video rental company.

The company is on a role with the recent price reductions by Microsoft and Sony on their XBox 360 and Playstation 3, respectively. 6.2 million new subscribers are expected to be added to the Netflix subscription count over the next quarter when all these new game console owners enroll in the Netflix Instant Watch program. The company added 1 million subscribers when XBox added the service recently.

Newman’s Own pizza is a company founded by actor Paul Newman in 1982. Their pizzas are all natural and the company strives to donate profits back to its community. $280 million has been donated to local charities by the pizza maker. Paul Newman passed away last year after a long success acting career.

The popular DVD renter Netflix started its business sending out titles by mail, but soon after its initial success in this field, it pioneered the online movie streaming market.

Today, there are a plethora of Netflix-compatible devices that you can purchase to avoid the US postman. Probably the most common device (and the original Netflix box) is the Roku Digital Video Player, which is priced at just $100. The Roku DVR has built in WiFi for streaming the rented videos out to your home display devices, like HD flat screen displays or overhead projectors.

But other devices abound. The Microsoft Xbox 360 is now Netflix enabled, as well as the Sony PlayStation 3. That means you can play games and watch movies at the same time! In addition, you can use your TiVo HD and HD XL DVR to download and store your movies for later viewing.

There are lots of positive features of Netflix online movie services, but here are a few that are hot off the tech press. Netflix was recently released for TiVo users, so that means that if you have a TiVo box and subscribe to the TiVo HD, TiVo HD XL or TiVo Series3 DVR service, you can use the Netflix interface and download your movies that way. Also new to Netflix is the ability to use your Apple TV DVR to download the latest blockbusters.

Mac users also got a boost with other options. They can now use the “Watch Instantly” feature of Netflix by just turning on their Apple desktop, laptop, or Mac mini, and then use the Safari or Firefox 2+ browser to watch movies streamed from Netflix. The new smooth streaming of online movies to Mac users is made possible by Microsoft’s software called Silverlight.

In a press release earlier this month, Netflix announced that 1 million XBOX Live Gold users have activated Netflix on the XBOX systems. This occurred over the past three months since XBOX Live became available in November of 2008. The service allows these members to instantly watch movies and television episodes directly through their video game devices.

Thousands of Titles and More Coming

So far 1.5 billion minutes of content has been downloaded and watched through the XBOX 360 Netflix agreement. Netflix is offering over 12,000 movies and tv episodes for immediate viewing through download. The number of titles available is expected to group along with the number of high definition (HD) titles offered.
