The rise of pop-up cinemas

Pop up cinemas are taking London by storm with the underground film scene scrambling to build microplex cinemas in any space available, in opposition to the anti-social aspects of the traditional multiplex monsters.

Pop up cinemas can take place anytime and anywhere as the following examples show, the idea is to reignite the social aspect of films by taking audiences to a strange new world and to be able to chat amongst themselves whilst watching a familiar film. Most of the pop up cinemas focus on cult film selections and the Secret Cinema events have included titles such as Bladerunner, Lawrence of Arabia and The Fifth Element.

Secret Cinema is the daddy of the underground cinema scene in London and ticket holders get invited to a mystery location by email and get cryptic clues to the film they will see and a rather bizarre dress code request.

The clever people behind secret cinema find isolated or dilapidated locations around London and dress the venues up to suit the feel of each particular film.

Secret Cinema’s success lies in the fact it is incredibly social and gets people excited enough to go and watch a film they have probably already seen dozens of times just for the thrill of the event.

Portobello pop up cinema is a not for profit venue situated in the Westway underpass on the Portobello Road / Acklam Road junction. Tickets prices for films are run on a pay-what-you-can-afford basis with a suggested price tag of £4.

Usually run through the summer months Portobello pop up cinema is supported by various charities and foundations and welcomes the influence and input of artists, volunteers and new filmmakers.

The Cineroleum Pop-Up Cinema in Clerkenwell made use of an abandoned petrol station and car park to whack in some temporary rows of seating for up to 118 people. The cinema was constructed by fifteen artists, designers and architects and a few curious neighbours.

Built from donated and found materials the cinema has a rustic hap-hazard feel and looks quite intriguing to commuters and cyclists whizzing past on their way into the city.

The selection of films shown at the cinema included American drive through classics such as The Long Goodbye and Rebel Without a Cause. The Cineroleum proves that the derelict spaces in London can be put to good use and as there are 4,000 derelict petrol stations in London, this could be a good place to start!

Guerrilla Cinema is a mobile cinema set up to bring documentaries to the people! In response to escalating theatre prices Guerrilla cinema want to bring film back to the masses and make people think while they are at it!

Avatar: Inspiration for reflection and contemplation

Much has been said of the Avatar, since the first information about the film already cried it would be a revolution of the 7th art.The film was released and already holds the record for highest grossing film of all time. According to the movie enthusiasts the great banner of this revolution was the result of the incredible CGI technology applied to the work. I agree. And I would also say that marketing used to leverage the film was extraordinary.

But is that Avatar is just technology and advertising?

Maybe this deviates a little visual excellence viewers’ attention to the messages contained in the film. I’ve been watching film reviews from fellow bloggers and viewers of the film and most agree that the film’s plot is fairly simple, with many cliches.Indeed it is. But so what? A film with simple plot and clichés can not contain important messages? I think that from the moment we have a movie where everything is new, I can not say the movie cliches that have committed to work. Imagine AVATAR with a complex plot and no cliche, that is, with no bridge to what we already knew the movie. Would you be good?Would you be understood? Does that arouse people’s interest? These are points that deserve consideration. Still, I consider each issue raised in the film, which reaches many people and that subtly transcends the simplicity of the plot and its unique universe.

Criticism of the war in Iraq
There is a very symbolic phrase in the movie, spoken by Colonel Quaritch:  We’ll win. The plan was to invade the human Pandora to occupy the sacred territory of Na’vi and to explore the rare ore unobtanium , worth a fortune for many companies earthlings and generate profits for their shareholders. For this they needed to vacate the place, for good or evil. Military mercenaries allied firms to take advantage of this occupation and brought all their know-how and equipment for this war. For those who know well, that’s exactly what caused the war in Iraq under the false justification that Saddam Hussein manufactured bombs of mass destruction and that this would be a threat to humanity. And what is Avatar? A great allegory on the conflict created by the Americans. In fact the criticism is not against imperialism and against the Americans. They are the star because they are facing these conflicts and are the most powerful nation on earth.

Concept of multiple realities
Despite all the drama involved, AVATAR explores a subject much studied in metaphysics: the theory of multiple realities or dimensions. Imagine that your mind reaches different types of reality. Just realize that you only one: that you experience now. There are some people who gain access to other levels of reality, as the spiritualist mediums (interact with the spiritual world), to sleepwalk, so the telepaths. But most are not. This skill requires a high sensory sensitivity. And this kind of situation is curtailed by empirical knowledge. In AVATAR, it is clear that science has mastered this skill and have your proof through the traditional scientific method. The film not only deepens the technology used by scientists to make this transmigration. Moreover, transmigration is a term already known to scientists and researchers metaphysical. The word transmigration (or metempsychosis, for the Greeks) is a process for the behavior of incoming beings. Enterer is the name used to determine origin of spiritual beings, not using the means Divine (Cosmic Law = Law of the Incarnation), to establish and use a body caused by physical, incarnate in our midst.

Avatar and Spiritualism
For the spiritualists and supporters, it is easy to identify a correlation between the reality of Na’vi with the theory of higher plane Kardecists. In the spiritual philosophy, there are several spiritual planes (also called colonies). In one, the disembodied spirit (or even red in some cases as in the dream) has access to the plan. In this plan, be living in a constant harmony with nature that surrounds him, as if it were an extension of its essence. Live harmoniously among its peers and is devoid of feelings as materialism and worldly desires. The connection between this plan and Pandora is too obvious to anyone who knows these teachings. And the relationship itself between the reality of the reality of human Na’vi is also a way to associate the concepts of the spiritual and the earthly plane.

So realize that Avatar is much more than a cliché love story, a movie or a technologically perfect big case of marketing. It is a tasty philosophical journey, full of signs and issues unpretentious, packaged in a perfect soundtrack, a lush photography and a unique idea in the film industry. I tip my hat to James Cameron and all his brilliant team.

My Favorite Date Movies

Dating can be nerve-wracking, to say the least.  Taking that special someone to a movie is generally a good way to ensure he or she will have a nice time.  However, depending on the box office to supply your local theater with a good date movie is not always a safe bet.  Don’t underestimate a nice night in, cuddled up on your couch with a bowl of popcorn, a blanket, and a choice film from the video store.  Be on the lookout for one of these gems when choosing what you will rent for the evening.

If you’re looking for something in the black and white variety, give Bringing Up Baby a try.  This romantic comedy starring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant tells the story of a misguided girl who loses a leopard.  At a loss for what to do, she convinces a well-meaning paleontologist to help her find it.  The movie chronicles their misadventures, and details exactly how they fall in love with one another.

If your date is made of stronger stuff and enjoys a good spook, stick with the classic Poltergeist.  While this film is packed with frights, it also gives you moments of unintentional laughter due to the extremely dated special effects.  However, during those moments that are truly hair-raising, you can bet that you and your companion will inch a little closer to each other.

Some ladies and gents find that their type is “different.”  Those who look different, speak differently, read obscure books, and listen to little known music.  They also enjoy movies that aren’t exactly mainstream.  Enter The Science of Sleep, a film about a girl who meets a boy who is a little off-kilter, but who intrigues her and finds his way deep into her subconscious.  The Science of Sleep is honest and sweet, but uncomfortable and a bit disturbing, in a soft manner.

The next movie is perfect for those who have established a serious relationship, but just need a night snuggled up together.  Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is the story of a couple who have recently parted ways.  One of them is so upset that she has her ex-boyfriend erased from her memory.  Once he realizes what she’s done, he decides to do the same, in retaliation.  However, once the process begins, he realizes that the memory of her is all he has left, and that he doesn’t want to lose that last bit of her.  Eternal Sunshine will break your heart, but it will bring to mind all the things you love and need about your significant other.

No matter your age or background, there isn’t a person who has a beating heart that won’t appreciate the gentle whimsy of Harvey.  Starring Jimmy Stewart and a gigantic invisible bunny, Harvey tells the story of a man who has rejected the harshness of reality, and replaced it with his own interpretation of the world around him.  No matter how the date ends, Harvey will leave you with a smile on your face.

Any of these movies would lead to a wonderful ending to your romantic evening!

Is the Netflix Free Trial Worth Trying?

Is the Netflix free trial worth trying? I get asked that question a lot. In fact, it’s been put to me so many times that I’ve decided to write an article to explain my stance on the situation. That way, the next time someone comes up and says, “Is the Netflix free trial worth trying?”, I can simply direct them here.

When you sign up for the Netflix free trial, you’ll receive a free membership to Netflix for the amount of time stated on their website. As of this writing, the free trial runs for 1 month. In other cases, the trial has only lasted for two weeks. If you’ve ever taken advantage of the free trial before, or if someone in your home is currently a Netflix subscriber (or has been in the last 12 months), then you won’t be eligible. You will also need to enter a valid method of payment in order to get started.

Once the free trial is underway, you’ll be able to log in to the Netflix website and choose which movies you would like to have delivered to your home. You will also have the option to watch an unlimited number of streaming movies over your computer.

When you take part in the Netflix free trial, you’ll be able to participate in the lowest rung of their standard subscription service. This means that you’ll be able to have one movie at a time in your home, but you still have access to an unlimited number of streaming movies through their website.

If you don’t wish to become a regular Netflix subscriber, you’ll need to cancel your free trial before the one month period is up. If, for example, you joined on January 15th, you’ll have until February 15 to cancel. If you fail to cancel your membership, you’ll automatically be charged $9.99 for the next month of service (which will continue until you cancel). If you cancel, you’ll have seven days to return any outstanding DVDs. A reminder email will be sent if you fail to comply. After a period of time, Netflix will charge your credit or debit card for their lost items.

For those who like Netflix well enough to become full-time subscribers, you’ll be able to choose from the following subscription options:

$7.99 – No DVDs are sent to your home, but you have access to an unlimited number of streaming movies.

$9.99 – Unlimited streaming and 1 DVD at home

$14.99 – Unlimited streaming and 2 DVDs at home

$19.99 – Unlimited streaming and 3 DVDs at home

$27.99 – Unlimited streaming and 4 DVDs at home

$34.99 – Unlimited streaming and 5 DVDs at home

$41.99 – Unlimited streaming and 6 DVDs at home

$48.99 – Unlimited streaming and 7 DVDs at home

$55.99 – Unlimited streaming and 8 DVDs at home

So to answer the question “Is the Netflix free trial worth trying?”: Yes, it’s worth the minute or two it takes to sign up. You’ll have access to everything that a regular subscriber does, plus you’re not paying a penny. Few things in life are free, but this is one of them.

The Chronicles of Narnia The Voyage of The Dawn Treader

You can see why there was so much humming and harring surrounding the production of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The resulting movie is exactly what Disney expected it to be: A fantasy bore. The Dawn Treader? More like The Yawn Treader.

It was hoped that the Narnia Chronicles could emulate The Potter and Rings franchise with an equally smooth transition to the big screen. But these high hopes were dashed long before the release of The Dawn Treader after disappointing returns on Prince Caspian (2008) (which earned $415 million worldwide but fell way short of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’s staggering $745 million haul). It begs the question: why make the movie in the first place?  The damage had already been done.

The trials and tribulations of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader had been much publicized. Producing Disney delayed and then pulled out of financing the movie. The Mouse House should have trusted their inkling; now they have another lead balloon on their hand, a sinking a ship if you will.  It just goes to show that bad things do come in threes and The Chronicles of Narnia movies is definitely a terrible threesome.

In a rather cumbersome fashion, the film does reflect the dark and dreary post-war years in which C.S Lewis penciled the Narnia stories; reflecting the issue of morality that he saw being drained and then later restored by the war’s outcome.  The Dawn Treader’s plot is arguably the most Tolkien-esque of the Narnia movies – a cod-medieval adventure, special effects and in-your-face nakedly religious overtones; like having a fat greasy vicar preach directly in your and then belch in your mouth after-wards.

The Pevensies are back in Narnia. Lucy (Henley), Edmund (Keynes) and their brat of a cousin Eustace Scrubb (Poulter) join their old friend Caspian (Barnes) on the ship Dawn Treader as they embark on a voyage beyond Narnia’s seas in search for the seven lost lords. Rather remarkably Liam Neeson’s remarkable streak of bad movies continues, if anything it’s kind of impressive; Aslan’s booming god-like voice is simply an unwelcomed distraction.

The success of The Dawn Treader will be crucial in determining the direction of the four remaining films, (yes that’s right, four remaining films). Next up, presumably, is The Silver Chair. I am literally praying that after witnessing 133 minutes of sheer agony that those Disney’s bigwigs see sense this time around and put a stop to this unbearable franchise.
