Talking About High School Musicals

The Selection This Month for Families: High School Musicals

This working mom with two small children could not even imagine living in a world that didn’t have Netflix as a part of it. That was actually the case prior to my beginning working here. Now, to showcase precisely how Netflix positively affects lives we’ve put together, “This Month’s Picks For Families”. Each month we will offer ideas and recommendations that might fit well in the routine of your family that month. In addition, we will also include some recipe and craft ideas, but don’t fret, they will be kept practical and realistic.

It was very early in the journey of parenting that it became apparent the awesome power music holds to alter the mood not only in the house, but especially in the car. My kids got to meet Michael Buble and Stevie Wonder at an early age, so I am able to listen to Superstition almost as often as I am Let It Go. And even though I classify myself as 100% tone deaf, it doesn’t prevent me from breaking into a song at the same time I am attempting to get my kids to follow my instructions and get something done.

To get both older and younger kids into the spirit of the musical feeling as we prepare for those spring musicals seemingly popping up everywhere, we’ve put together a list of some movies to aid the cause.

For the older kids:

1. Camp Rock
2. The Phantom of the Opera
3. Footloose
4. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
5. Grease
6. High School Musical
7. Shrek the Musical

For the younger kids:

1. Rock-A-Doodle
2. Leap Frog: Numberland
3. The Prince of Egypt
4. Pochahontas
5. Mulan

I am fairly certain my children inherited my two left feet and tone deaf ears, so we’ll have our fun at home watching musicals. You can see how simple it is to put together your personal No Sew Stage Curtain by clicking here.

You might also want to click here to find out just how to put together your personal Shrek-inspired parfait.

Perhaps with these title suggestions, you will be able to simply Let It Go out of your mind and thoughts.

Season 3 Of The Walking Dead: Episode 5: “Say The Word”

Season 3 Of The Walking Dead: Episode 5

One of the interesting ideas that The Walking Dead TV show has tackled this season — more interesting in my view anyway, than the continuous investment in skull- piercing technology — is the idea of surrender. In a destroyed world where 50% of the population wants to take a bite out of you and the rest want to keep you locked in a crazy version of an old-fashioned town, the only way to survive seems to give up. Of course, surrendering is not the same in every situation.

The “Say the Word” episode offers an hour of solid entertainment as well as two different paths of least resistance. You can choose to be like Andrea and the rest of the Woodbury captives and simply enjoy the idea of a beautiful fictional life that includes ice cold lemonade and rock music playing over the loud speakers, just ignore the zombie orthodontist that has a weapon for a hand. Or you can be more like Rick and develop amazing killing machine skills which replace any trace of sanity. And also like Rick’s group, you could gradually grow more cold and violent, longing for a level of revenge that can never be fulfilled.

Rick’s nervous breakdown is grim but also necessary to the plot. As anyone who has noticed Michonne’s impressive knife work has already figured out, The Walking Dead is the best when in extremes. Walking Dead Season 2 featured life on the sunny farm after the zombie apocalypse, it was important for the show to offer viewers a true sense of the alternative. The stakes are high and for the show to succeed it cannot always be about keeping the walkers out. The horror of it all must slip in on occasion. Rick’s loss is not like Hershel’s — it cannot just be hacked off. So while I wasn’t too fond of the scene with a crazed Rick grabbing the neck of nice guy Glenn — I could appreciate the demise of the once stoic leader. Rick is not quite a hero and he is not a walker, he’s in limbo. When Jenner revealed that the living were infected with the virus who could have known what this could mean for the survivors?

Because I’m not a certified zombieologist I need a bit of clarification. When the completely distraught Rick finally made it to the boiler room and found the floor covered with Lori’s blood and the bullet his son used to finish her off, where was her dead body? Or did the fat walker in the room eat her whole? No matter what you say I think it’s pretty disgusting. I just hope that we find out whether Carol is still alive on the next episode of the show!

Avatar: A Great 3-D Film Experience

If you haven’t seen a 3-D film in a while, you’re in for a pleasant surprise. Unlike the 3-D movies of yesteryear, today’s 3-D films are incredibly immersive and extremely exciting. One exceptional example is the movie “Avatar,” which debuted in theaters in 2009. While it’s been a few years since “Avatar” was released, it continues to amaze audiences with its high-quality 3-D animations. Unlike the 3-D movies of years past, “Avatar” manages to incorporate three-dimensional elements in a completely natural way. While watching the film, it’s easy to forget that you’re sitting in a theater or your living room. Find out why “Avatar” is so special by checking out the following information.

Low-Key 3-D Effects

When using 3-D, many films reserve it for a handful of scenes. That’s not the case with “Avatar.” Instead of throwing out 3-D graphics during specific scenes, the film relies on them from the moment it begins until the moment it ends. That doesn’t mean that you are constantly being bombarded with images that fly directly at you. Instead, the effects are used in a wonderfully subtle way. Instead of projecting out at you, the 3-D effects are used to draw you into the action. You’ll find yourself slipping off your 3-D glasses from time to time to make sure that you’re actually watching a 3-D film.

Movement in the film

Another thing that makes the 3-D special effects in “Avatar” so amazing is that they occasionally make you feel like you’re moving right along with the characters. There are several flying scenes in the film, and they make audiences feel like they are along for the ride. Impeccable editing and exciting music intensifies the excitement of such scenes, and you won’t want them to come to an end. The 3-D effects in “Avatar” transform jungle chase scenes into something that’s truly amazing.

Enjoying “Avatar” at Home

Some would say that the only way to get the most out of a film like “Avatar” is by seeing it in the theater, but that’s not necessarily true. The right 3D TV makes it easy to enjoy a fantastic film like this from the comfort of your own home. 3-D TVs have come a really long way. When paired with a high-quality Blu-ray player, a 3D TV can bring the excitement and drama of an amazing film like “Avatar” into your own living room. To make things even better, invest in a top-notch surround-sound system.

There’s no question that 3-D films have been enjoying a great deal of popularity lately. Some 3-D movies are better than others, but that’s true about any genre of film. If you’d like to get your 3-D television adventure off to an incredible start, though, you should opt for a movie like “Avatar.” In addition to wowing audiences in theaters around the world, the movie makes a profound impression when viewed at home with the right television set. Even if you’ve already seen “Avatar,” you should give it another try at home. It is sure to become one of your favorite 3-D movies.

The Anatomy of a Guitar

In 1996, Ali Khamenei issued a fatwa about mus...
Image via Wikipedia

The modern guitar has evolved over the years from the early vihuela, invented in 15th Century Spain, to become the instrument that we all know and love. There are some lovely instruments out there that would make even those who don’t particularly care for the guitar sit up and take notice. There also exists a dizzying array of options and paint jobs to choose from these days, and the salesmen in the music store use so much jargon that it can be quite intimidating for a beginner who just wants to buy their first guitar.

So let’s demystify the guitar jargon and explain what all the different terms mean that relate to its anatomy.

The Parts of a Guitar

The different parts of a guitar have quite exotic sounding names that don’t necessarily give any obvious clues about which bit of the guitar they relate to. You wouldn’t expect a musical instrument to be made partly from a “nut”, or a “bridge”, would you? Some of the other pats are more logically named, for example the “sounding board” is a no nonsense description of the the function of that part of the guitar.

So lets look at a few of the parts in turn.

The Body

The body of an acoustic guitar is hollow and has a hole in it between the fretboard and the bridge. The purpose of the hollow body and the hole are to amplify the sound generated by the vibrating strings. Electric guitars on the other hand do not require hollow bodies because their sound is amplified electronically using an amplifier, or “amp”.

The Headstock

The headstock of the guitar is right at the opposite end of the guitar to the body and is the important section of the guitar from the point of view of making sure it is in tune. The headstock is where the tuning pegs are located. The tuning pegs (sometimes called “machine heads”), are used to adjust the tension of the guitar strings, thereby altering the pitch produced when they are played.

The Nut and the Bridge

The nut is usually made from plastic or bone and is a narrow strip with grooves cut into it across which the strings are stretched. The strings reach along the length of the guitar and pass over the bridge, which is located on the body of the guitar. The distance between the nut and the bridge defines the length of each of the strings that is free to vibrate when plucked. The further this distance, the lower the note produced.

These are the basics of the guitar. Now you know them you can go to the guitar store with confidence and not feel intimidated by all the jargon.

Don’t forget to take your wallet!

Popular Anime Series Available on DVDs

Japanese animation has grown tremendously in popularity over the years. A once local phenomenon has become a worldwide past time. Heavy translation of both manga comics and animated series has lead to a global fascination with the unique culture and interesting stories told through anime.  Anime classifies a whole array of categories that cater to many different audiences.  There are children, adult, and countless other types of animated series to satisfy any interest.

Action Based Animation

Perhaps the most common type of anime is the action adventure story. There is a hero and he embarks on some journey or quest. This popular story line however, is often presented in new and intriguing ways. Animation can bring an old and tired plot device into a new light, creating excitement and interest in fantasy characters. Some of these shows quickly fall flat, while others like Naruto air for years, clearing hundreds of different episodes and maintaining a incredible following of viewers.

The only issue with this type of series is maintaining interest. Driving a simplistic plot through three hundred episodes is no easy task. The journey often consists of a number of throw-away episodes known as filler allowing the story and it’s plot line to stay ahead of the curve. These episodes can detract from the overall excitement of a series and cause lasting damage to a brand name if they aren’t developed correctly. Keeping a long running series packed with excitement is a problem facing any kind of TV show, not just anime.

Drama and Thrillers

Another adaptation seen in popular animation are short stories that target an older audience. Death Note comes to mind as a particularly well executed thriller.  It tells the story of a boy who is granted god-like powers of life and death and can use them at a whim. Dark themes clouded by ethics and moral dillemas run throughout the series, making for an interesting and exciting ride. The audience, a smaller and older group of people, is less specialized since they don’t need to watch hundreds of episodes to reach the shows conclusion.

Both types of series can present exceptional commercial success. Naruto is an obvious slam dunk for the producers, who have targeted a specific audience and delivered flawlessly. This combination is not easy to achieve. Establishing a fan base and keeping them satisfied with the direction of the series might be easy for awhile, but somewhere around the 300th episode it might get a bit difficult. Shorter series will always hold a bit of higher regard because they are cleaner and unblemished by silly side plots.
