Watch Music Videos

Image via CrunchBase

Music and music videos have evolved so much within the last decade. One of the most important changes has occurred in the way that people view videos. There’s a lot of be said for all of the new technology that has surfaced for music lovers. People watch music videos on cell phones, laptops, and iPads. This is part of the changing evolution of digital technology.

It did not take a long time for videos to catch up with the digital movement that has taken place by way of the internet. Music has been heard, shared, and stored on the internet for years. It became such a big deal for music lovers to share and have access to large music collections at any given time. Videos had to follow sooner or later.

It happened very much sooner. Videos have changed along with MP3 music technology that has progressed. This has happened primarily because many stations like MTV, CMT, and BET have changed their formats. These stations were previously heavily video-based channels. This has changed as reality television shows have emerged and become more popular. Videos have taken a backseat on the channels that are primarily known for videos.

The result of all of this has brought music videos to a new platform. The web is now the place where sites like You Tube have become the mainstream sites for music videos. People can watch from their smart phones and select the videos that they desire at any given time. This has enticed more and more people who want to watch music videos online.

This growing trend has also led to a greater number of singles from one album. Two decades ago an album containing an average of 8 tracks would yield around 3 videos. A 10 track album today may possibly yield 5 or 6 videos.

Eminem on His Plight as a White Man

In his 60 Minutes interview with Anderson Cooper last year, Eminem talked at length about his titanic comeback following drug abuse and time away from the spotlight. The interview was supposed to be a look into Eminem’s re-found astronomical success and relevance. And it was, until the rapper made a comment that surely gave many pause: that the labels “homophobic” and “misogynistic” often attached to his music by critics would have been overlooked entirely if he had been black.

Talk about a loaded answer. The man who has been scrutinized for his skin color and referred to by his worst detractors as “hip-hop’s Elvis” using the defense that if he had been black, he would have gotten away with it. That’s certainly a new one there, coming from an unlikely source. Make no mistake, Eminem is one of the most talented artists of his generation from any genre, but there has been great debate as to whether he would have achieved the same level of popularity had he not been white—and if his remarks would have resonated with the same controversy, or caused more, so much more that he never would have achieved even a sliver of his current success.

It is very true, however, that it is more of a norm for black rappers to discuss misogynistic themes. It is extremely prevalent in much of popular rap. Artists boast about their lack of respect for women, and even go so far as to champion the merits of pimping and even violence towards the fairer sex. There is frequent use of the derogatory terms “b*****s” and “h**s,” and most backlash has been squashed long ago. There is some homophobia as well, with tough guy rappers deriding the competition as “gay” or “f*****s.”

That said, Eminem received so much attention because he took these themes even further. He rhymed about brutally killing his then-wife, Kim, on several songs. He openly and bluntly spoke out against homosexuality. Violence and violent thoughts are prevalent throughout his albums. He claims his Slim Shady persona is a joke, meant to be over-the-top, and it is. But to blatantly stir controversy talking about violence towards women and gays, and turning it into unparalleled success, seems coldly calculated. The fact is, he is a pop star, one embraced by people who do not listen to rap. And he did so by being controversially misogynistic and homophobic, as well as an amazing rapper. That to me makes the race card seem completely out of place.

Star Wars Clone Wars Game Delayed Until March

It’s bad news for Star Wars fan, as the independent reveals that their latest Lego game, Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars has been further delayed. This was recently expected to be hitting the shelves in mid February, having been postponed from last November, but now will be delayed until around late March.

Shoppers will be able to get their hands of the new game on March 22nd in North America and March 25th in Europe. It will be available in Wii, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC format as well as available on portable gaming formats for the PSP and Nintendo DS.

The game is currently being developed by Traveller’s Tales and will be published – eventually – by LucasArts. The Clone Wars is the sequel video game to LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game and LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy.

Traveller’s Tales are the same team that put together the previous LEGO Star Wars game and the LEGO Indiana Jones series. The company was founded in 1989 and became fully established in 1990. It is based in Knutsford in Cheshire, United Kingdom. Some of their earliest games included Leander, Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Puggsy which were published through Psygnosis. They have also worked with other publishers such as Eidos Interactive, Disney Interactive Studios, Warner Bros and Sega.

“LucasArts continues to set the bar for next-generation family entertainment,” said Darrell Rodriguez, president of LucasArts. “The LEGO Star Wars franchise is a massive hit with fans, bringing in sales of over 20 million units worldwide. We’re thrilled to extend this experience to LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars, delivering the humour and fun players expect from this award winning franchise.”

The LEGO Star Wars III game will include all of the Star Wars characters from the first two seasons of the popular animated TV series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Fan-favourite characters from the theatrical Star Wars Saga will also be included. Players of the game can play either as a Jedi or Seperatist and the developers have added a whole range of new character abilities including the squad command, lightsaber slicing, lightsaber jumps, long distance Jedi attacks, Squad command and Grapple Tie-Ups. New battle modes are also included within the game for improved head to head combat and the ability to build your own levels, a feature it is hoped that will make the LEGO video game one of the most popular Star Wars games ever to be released.

The rise of pop-up cinemas

Pop up cinemas are taking London by storm with the underground film scene scrambling to build microplex cinemas in any space available, in opposition to the anti-social aspects of the traditional multiplex monsters.

Pop up cinemas can take place anytime and anywhere as the following examples show, the idea is to reignite the social aspect of films by taking audiences to a strange new world and to be able to chat amongst themselves whilst watching a familiar film. Most of the pop up cinemas focus on cult film selections and the Secret Cinema events have included titles such as Bladerunner, Lawrence of Arabia and The Fifth Element.

Secret Cinema is the daddy of the underground cinema scene in London and ticket holders get invited to a mystery location by email and get cryptic clues to the film they will see and a rather bizarre dress code request.

The clever people behind secret cinema find isolated or dilapidated locations around London and dress the venues up to suit the feel of each particular film.

Secret Cinema’s success lies in the fact it is incredibly social and gets people excited enough to go and watch a film they have probably already seen dozens of times just for the thrill of the event.

Portobello pop up cinema is a not for profit venue situated in the Westway underpass on the Portobello Road / Acklam Road junction. Tickets prices for films are run on a pay-what-you-can-afford basis with a suggested price tag of £4.

The Cineroleum Pop-Up Cinema in Clerkenwell made use of an abandoned petrol station and car park to whack in some temporary rows of seating for up to 118 people. The cinema was constructed by fifteen artists, designers and architects and a few curious neighbours.

Built from donated and found materials the cinema has a rustic hap-hazard feel and looks quite intriguing to commuters and cyclists whizzing past on their way into the city.

The selection of films shown at the cinema included American drive through classics such as The Long Goodbye and Rebel Without a Cause. The Cineroleum proves that the derelict spaces in London can be put to good use and as there are 4,000 derelict petrol stations in London, this could be a good place to start!
