The Biggest Box Office Bombs

Success in Hollywood can bring wealth and fame beyond your wildest dreams, with actors, writers, director and producers earning millions of pounds a year but making a movie is a difficult business fraught with risk and there are many cautionary tales of films that cost huge amounts of money but lost fortunes after failing at the box office. Here is a list of five of the most well known bombs.

One of the most infamous failures was the 1987 comedy Ishtar starring Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman as a pair of talentless singers who travel to Morocco looking for work but find themselves caught up in a power struggle between the CIA, the Emir of Ishtar and the rebels trying to overthrow his regime. Even during production, the project was getting a lot of media attention for the huge budget and rampant overspending. Upon its release it was panned by the critics and ended up making a huge loss.

Cutthroat Island was an action, adventure, comedy produced in 1995, which starred Geena Davis and Matthew Modine, as a female pirate and her companion who have to race against their rivals to find a hidden island that contains a fabulous treasure. The film was directed by Renny Harlin, who at the time was Davis’s husband. The movie is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest box office flop of all time. It actually bankrupted the studio, Carolco Pictures and was the last film produced by the company before its closure.

The Postman was an adaptation of the award winning novel by author David Brin. The film is set in the United States after an apocalyptic event has almost destroyed the human race.  The film was directed by Kevin Costner, who also starred as the man trying to rebuild civilization by resuming the postal service. The film was released on Christmas Day 1997 by Warner Bros. Pictures to appalling reviews and eventually went on to lose the studio millions due to its failure at the box office.

Gigli was a 2003 film written and directed by Martin Brest and starring Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. The film was already under the spotlight before it had even started shooting due to the media’s fascination with the romance between Affleck and Lopez, who had been nicknamed “Bennifer”. The film was panned by the critics and has often been referred to as one of the worst movies ever made.

You many never have even heard of the 2005 science fiction film A Sound of Thunder directed by Peter Hyams. Rumours abound surrounding the reason for the film’s delayed release including flooding on location and various financial problems, such as the bankruptcy of the original production company. Whatever happened, the film experienced poor reviews and a distinct lack of promotion, which resulted in massive losses.
