Harry Potter v Twilight: a Debate

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Image via Wikipedia

Growing up I was always an avid reader; whilst the other teenagers were out smoking their first cigarettes or kissing, I spent school break-times in the library. One day I was looking for something new to read, and a slightly weird boy from my class pointed out a book about a young wizard named Harry Potter and said it would be the next big thing. I was skeptical. Then I started to read it and really didn’t rate it at all. I found the writing clumsy and a bit childish. Despite not making it past chapter one, I tagged along to the cinema to watch the first film then went to see the second as a bit of a joke. Before long I was up to date with the movies, and despite not reading any of the books, I was very interested to discover how it was all going to end and borrowed a copy of The Deathly Hallows book from my Potter mad boyfriend at the time. I found, to my joy, that the writing style had changed; it was darker, more grown up, and I powered through the massive novel in a few days.

My initial distrust and now love of Potter has made me wonder if I will ever feel the same way about Twilight; I’ll admit I haven’t read any of the books (although I flicked through the first one at a house party and found the dialogue slightly dull and repetitive; in having the Crucio curse inflicted upon me would be less painful) and I’ve only seen the first film. It failed to hold my attention, and as a result I’ve had no desire to watch the rest. In some ways I am curious; I want to know exactly what it is about a sparkly vampire who steals the engine out of his girlfriend’s car so she can’t go and visit another boy that women of all ages seem to find so sexually appealing. All I’m saying is that if my pasty boyfriend wasn’t up for pre-marital relations, It wouldn’t matter if my car was broken because I’d walk round to the tanned boy with the six pack’s house.

Now I’m not the world’s most romantic person, so perhaps that’s the problem. But what is Harry Potter if not a love story? A beautiful, slow burning love story between Ron and Hermione, with tiny hints dropped here and there in the text; from Hermione’s reaction to Ron’s dalliance with Lavender Brown, to Ron’s jealousy of Harry and Hermione’s friendship (which is represented quite graphically in the film version of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – I was taken aback!).

Another issue I have with Twilight is the plot, or lack thereof. Again, I’ve not read any of the books or seen the films so please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, but from what I can gather it’s simply a story of a boy falling in love with a girl and the story of their relationship from the day they meet until they have a child. The entire story revolves around their love affair. In Harry Potter the characters are embroiled in a battle between good and evil. There are intricate plot details and patterns which JK Rowling introduces in book one and ties up in book six. The books and films grow up with the readership. And of course, there’s the fun of trying to decide which house you would be in based on your personality (I’ve always identified myself as a Slytherin) which is slightly deeper than Team Edward or Team Jacob (ooh which boy is hotter?!).

In the battle of Harry Potter vs. Twilight, Harry Potter is a definite winner as far as I’m concerned. As well as creating a truly engaging story with interesting characters, Jo Rowling also invented a whole new language- any of you muggles up for a spot of quidditch?- and created enough enchanting scenes in her book to inspire a Harry Potter theme park (I’m not sure if I’d be interested in going to a theme park based on small town Washington).

This is of course, only my opinion. Many of my friends really enjoy the Twilight books so I’m sure they have something to offer; only they seem to have nothing to offer me. I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts in the comments.

When Should You Pay for a Cell Phone Lookup?

Finding the information associated with the owner or user of a particular cell phone has become a very lucrative business, and it has done so in a very short amount of time.  It was not too long ago that services like the White Pages online came to be, and in a few short decades these outlets have grown in size and application tremendously.  Today’s services are employed for a variety of reasons, some of which still include the original novelty and entertainment of the first uses as well as modern applications in locating individuals for profit.

The task of locating the owner or operator information for a given cell phone is called a reverse cell phone lookup, or in many cases, just a cell phone lookup.  The companies that provide this information are numerous, and depending on what type of information is needed, they can charge for their services.  There are many options for free cell phone lookup information, but these usually only return the minimum information available, and some only return initials and the city of registration for a reverse cell phone lookup free of charge.

Some of the more popular services like www.AnyWho.com, and, of course, the original, www.WhitePages.com, do offer these free search options, but the best and most accurate information is within the paid options.  These options allow access to search databases and return much more detailed and reliable information than can found through most free services. Just as laptops used to cost over $2,000 and now you can find new laptops under 300 dollars, advancing technology will force the price down for other technology, including cell phones and cell phone services.  While basic services are free now, even detailed cell phone lookup information should be inexpensive or free in the future.

One way to test the accuracy of the information provided through various outlets is to take some well-known information and see what returns are found for it.  Using one’s own number is often the best way to do this, and by simply comparing the free results from other providers or even from a search engine like Google, one can quickly estimate the reliability of different information providers.

Identifying a Literary Fiction

People oftentimes become confused about the difference of the literary fiction from other kinds of fictions just like the commercial fiction.    For this issue, lots of opinions have been made.  A lot of times, this topic has been subject to debates. Sometimes, even writers would be confused.  Hence, it is essential to know the similarities and the difference of literary fiction to others.

So, how do you describe literary fiction? To start off, confronting life as it is, is the way for literary fiction. The conflict and the action in this kind of fiction does not have much difference. This type of fiction confronts issues that are related to the conditions of human beings. The critical thinking of the readers are challenged and provoked by literary fiction. Literary fiction is made usually in a beautiful manner, making these famous for their awards from different award-giving bodies. The character and the expression are the aspects where literary fiction puts focus on. The conflict in the story may or may not be resolved in the end.

Yet, there are things which are common to all types of fictions. Such qualities are ignored by authors and writers.  This, knowing these similarities is essential. Correct grammar and editions is important for a fiction to be considered as a good one. It is also important that it is character-driven. The readers’ emotions are evoked because of how well the piece has been written. The readers would easily understand it because of the concreteness of the piece.

One would ask himself if it is necessary to label his work as a literary fiction or some other type.  Nope, this is not necessary to do.  However, it is a good thing that you would understand how a fiction is made so that you will be able to write the correct one if you are planning to write your very first literary novel.

How Much is Gene Simmons worth?

Gene Simmons (Chaim Witz) is an American rock and roll legend, actor, producer, entrepreneur and the bassist for the band KISS. He was a founding member of the band in 1973 and they continue to produce albums and tour 43 years later. He is so well known and loved that everyone asks how much Gene Simmons worth. Well he is estimated to have a net worth at $300 million.

Here is a brief biography of Gene Simmons. He was born in August 25th 1949 as Chaim Wits in Haifa Israel to Hungarian –Jewish parents, his mother Florence was a survivor of a NAZI concentration camp, and his father Chaim was a carpenter. At the age of five his parents got separated and Chaim and his mother moved to the US and settled in Williamsburg, Brooklyn New York and he was renamed Gene Klein. As a child he was introduced to his first love comic books and cartoons with the help of these new interests Gene picked up the English language adding to a vast vocabulary which also included Hebrew, Spanish, Turkish and Hungarian. (His make-up in Kiss came from his love of comic books) He saw the historic band The Beatles appearance on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964, Genes life was changed instantly; it would be the 15th year that his mother would give him a second guitar the Kent.

After years of playing lead guitar he changed to bass guitar because as he saw there was more guitarist than bassist. By 1968 he had already been apart of five separate music groups; Long Island Sounds, Rising Sun, the Missing Links, Bullfrog Bheer and Cathedral. With Wicked Lester he had an Epic Records recording deal but was unhappy with the sound and the group and ended up leaving. He never wasted a chance with education and in 1970 he graduated from Richmond College with a degree in education and four language degrees English, German, Hungarian and Hebrew. He worked as a sixth grade teacher and later gave up and held a job as a personal assistant with Vogue and Glamour magazines and the name Gene Simmons was adopted.

In 1973 he formed the group KISS with Paul Stanley. Their breakthrough came with the double live album, Alive! In 1975, KISS went at it hammer and tongs with striking stage shows featuring eye catching demonic make up. The albums Destroyer and Rock and Roll Over were released in 1976 and Love Gun and Alive II in 1977. The following year they released no less than four albums, all named after the orginal members of the band. They were hot and Simmons took advantage of every opportunity that came along: merchandising, acting, and all kinds of naming deals.

Gene expanded his interest and acted in Runway with Tom Selleck in 1948, appeared in Wanted Dead or Alive in 1986. He started producing and established a management company. Was considered the first producer to discover Van Halen although the demo tapes did not grow into a long term contract. He created the cartoon show My Dad the Rock Star in 2002, Whole Kiss and Make Up and Sex Money Kiss. In 2004 he finished filming Rock School Foe Channel 4 teaching classically trained 13-14 year-olds how to rock. He has appeared in the Apprentice with Donald Trump but was fired in the second week. In 2009, Kiss celebrated their 35th year in the music charts with the release of their first studio show album in nearly a decade. He finally married Shannon Lee Tweed in 2011 after dating for over 20 years and their two children Sophie and Nick live with them in California. You might have seen the A&E reality show Family Jewels featuring the family.

Current Events And You

Welcome to the age of information! Prognosticators like Alvin Toffler described this phenomenon as the third wave. During this time power resides on those who have the information and the ability to convert them for practical applications.

We are constantly bombarded with news reports on what’s happening in many parts of the world. They come in the form of current events articles providing everyone with a blow by blow account of what’s going on. Some quarters claim though that the sound and fury we watch on our screens are enhanced and embellished by news reporters and commentators whose motives are far from neutral.

Many people seem to be lost in the sea of data and information. Some walk around dazed and totally confused. They are the ones most vulnerable to demagogues who are adepts in capitalizing on other peoples’ state of confusion. This situation would most likely affect those who have no solid groundings or wide enough background about today’s big events.

Nothing just comes out from thin air. There must be reasons why something happens the way it does. The intense conflict for example between two groups of people is usually traceable to a long standing conflict with each other some even stretching for thousands of years back. In the light of this fact, the more knowledgeable and responsible current event article writer can play a very crucial role in enlightening the public on the roots on what’s coming up into the surface. It can almost exactly be compared to an iceberg. The events we actually witness today are just the tip of a massive block invisible to the naked eye.

Holding a balanced view and being able to make significant and meaningful connections with the seemingly random events is the result of a strong and deep sense of history coupled with an analytical bent of mind. Having such kind of perspective is a very helpful guide in mapping the future to be able to take appropriate action.

Even such ordinary concerns as knowing the ins and outs of the taste of wild coupons can be better appreciated if the pertinent information on the nature of coupons is properly understood.

So the next time you read your favorite newspaper or watch your favorite news channel you would have a fresh look and a better appreciation of what’s going on by arming yourself with a strong sense of history. Whether you are a writer or a reader it is a must that we all dig deep into the root of things.
